Preparations of coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10p) show large differences in bioavailability in humans. The results of the study show that the bioavailability of ubiquinol (QuinoMit® Q10 fluid) was about twice as high as that of ubiquinone (SanoMit® Q10 liquid and Bio-Quinol® Gold).

Introduction

Preparations of coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10p) show large differences in bioavailability in humans. These differences are attributed to the formulation and the dosage form. The aim of this study is to assess the bioavailability of three CoQ10 formulations. Two of them are liquid, colloidal dispersions of ultra-small (115 nm) droplets (QMF; QuinoMit® Q10 fluid and SM; SanoMit® Q10 liquid), the third is ubiquinone that has undergone a thermally crystallised dispersion process and comes in capsule form (BOG; Bio-Quinol® Gold).

Results

The bioavailability of the formulations showed large differences. The best absorbed formulation was OMF, as described by S. Man and B.O.G. Several studies reported no significant difference in the bioavailability of the two forms, while other studies demonstrated a significant bioavailability of ubiquinol supplements. This study showed better absorption of ubiquinol compared with both ubiquinone formulations. In addition there appears to be a different urinary metabolic kinetic behaviour between the two end products.

Materials and methods

CoQ10 formulations were tested in 14 healthy subjects. The CoQ10 concentration in plasma was determined by HPLC at various time points after a single intake of 100 mg CoQ10 of each formulation.
